Constructing Minds: Embracing Neurodiversity in the Industry

Did you know that, according to research by the National Federation of Builders, 1 in 4 people in the construction industry consider themselves to be neurodiverse? Yet, 75% of construction workers report that neurodiversity wasn’t discussed during recruitment or onboarding, suggesting missed opportunities to provide crucial support.

To address this gap, Midlands-based contractor Interclass, in partnership with the National Federation of Builders (NFB) and with support from the CITB Industry Impact Fund, has developed a tailored neurodiversity training programme for the construction industry. This initiative is designed to help organisations better understand how to support neurodivergent individuals and create a more inclusive work environment.

Join us for our May breakfast networking event to discover why neurodiversity matters, why this training is essential, what it entails, and how you can play a role in shaping a more inclusive future for the sector. Meet some of the G4C Midlands team and our special guest Sara Barnes for a thought-provoking breakfast event all about collaboration, networking, and all with FREE breakfasts, teas & coffees

Sara Barnes is a Preconstruction and Marketing Manager at Interclass. She is a passionate advocate for inclusion with over a decade of experience in the construction industry, having worked with Tier 1 and regional contractors. As a member of Interclass’ Senior Leadership Team, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s approach to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), championing the importance of diversity across the sector.

In addition to leading the Preconstruction team, Sara has also overseen the development of an industry-wide neurodiversity training programme designed to create a more supportive and accessible environment for neurodivergent individuals in construction. This programme aims to provide organisations with the tools and knowledge needed to embrace neurodiversity, promote accessibility, and drive positive and meaningful change across the industry.
